Consultant Spotlight: Rand McMullin

Two men looking at charts on computers

Hi, I’m Rand, and I work in DLC’s Finance & Accounting practice in Chicago. I’ve been with DLC for eleven years and have worked with nearly 20 clients.

At DLC, my client engagements have included…

I have worked in Information Technology, Manufacturing, Consumer Packaged Goods, Physical Therapy, Real Estate, Transportation Logistics, Retail, Wholesale, Education, Textbook, Water, and Insurance industries. I’ve enjoyed a variety of projects within the Finance & Accounting umbrella, including Accounting Management and Technical Accounting, FP&A, Financial Modeling, Post-Acquisition Integration, Shared Services, and Business Process Outsourcing, System Upgrades, M&A Due Diligence, and Finance Transformation.

I chose DLC because…

At DLC, I can make a difference. I’m constantly in high-impact situations where I can genuinely help a company through difficult challenges. When each assignment ends, I walk away with more friends and connections, having achieved something meaningful and worthwhile, and having gained new skills along the way. DLC is a great firm to grow as a professional and enjoy meaningful work.

A typical working day for me may consist of…

I like to exercise early in the morning and then read the paper on the train ride to work. At every client, my workday is mostly about solving problems, managing situations, and applying my professional toolkit to whatever the circumstances are. I work with fantastic clients with great people. Whether managing a project, cleaning up a balance sheet, working through technical accounting and finance matters, or implementing a new financial system, my days are all about how to maximize impact.  Client and project variety is an excellent perk at DLC. I’m never bored!

Something people may be surprised to learn about me is…

I have three teenage daughters and a ten-year-old son.  All three daughters will be in high school next year!

My proudest moment at DLC was…

I’ve helped a lot of companies meet tough goals. Perhaps one of the biggest wins was facilitating a successful spin-off for a REIT. It should have failed so many times, but we pulled off a win. When my clients succeed, I’m happy. Yes, it’s personal.

The thing I like most about working at DLC is…

I love the variety of experiences, challenging assignments, constant learning, and ongoing association with highly qualified professionals. The management team has earned my trust, time and time again. We have a great team.

Social causes that I am passionate about are…

I’m excited about the advancement of science & technology. I also actively support poverty alleviation, music & performing arts, as well as adult education & literacy.

When I’m not working on a client engagement, you’ll find me…

I enjoy skiing, cycling, mountain biking, sporting and music events, most anything outdoors, and traveling to new places. I’m happiest when I’m spending time with good friends and family.

If I had not chosen finance and accounting as a career, I’d be…

General management jobs would be my second career choice. I like to organize things and work with people. Finance and Accounting functions are my favorite, however. I feel right at home in this space.

The best career or leadership advice I’ve ever received was…

Believe in yourself! Put yourself in situations that challenge you. Surround yourself with good people. Actively learn new things every day. Keep up with advances in the profession — things change very quickly. Make allies everywhere, form alliances, and develop close partnerships.
